When Sunday's adoption event was just about over, we saw a young woman with a border collie on a leash and a matching black and white kitten in her other hand. We all thought she was making a fashion statement or something, but then she kept walking straight towards us. When she arrived, she asked if we knew anyone that needed a black and white kitten. Well of course YOU all know that we are overloaded with black and black & white kittens and cats. One of the core HART members talked to her and explained that we could rehome her kitten but she'd need to keep it at her house through the process. Then we got the whole story. She's a student in Blacksburg (VA Tech) and a mother cat had kittens in a "cow barn" near where she lives at school. The mother had been killed somehow and the siblings could not be found, but she was able to find this kitten. She thought it would be a good gift for her friend who lives in NoVA. So she brought the kitten up. Her friend's existing cat attacked the kitten, so that didn't work out. Her choices were to find a rescue group right then or take it to Blacksburg (kill shelters only) when she returned to school that evening. The HART person who was talking to her took the kitten. Such is life in the world of rescue!
