Great - but have you blurred that background yet?
My favoured method at the moment is to make a new layer before anything else. do a magnetic lassoo on the foreground - play around with the feathering. maybe even make the lassooing slightly inside the subject. Cut and paste so it makes this a 3rd layer. Work on the contrast/unsharp mask on that layer. Then go to layer two and gaussian blur the whol picture. If the 3rd layer is feathered right or slected slightly within the gargoyle, then the edge should look natural. Change the opacity of the 2nd layer to let more/less detail through.

That's Peter's patented method - not sure its the best but - hey....
