Bravo for the idea and the special point of
view, at least I haven't seen it shot this
way so far. However the sky is noisy and
that's easy to fix, also - the colours seem a
bit exaggerated.

from the thumbnail i thought it was a
coliseum, (jef above thought it was a dock),
which i hope was your intention; a great idea

short...
so i'm afraid it's thumbs down; we're going

@DeleteMe pool participants - As my time in
pool is running out (9 to 5), thx for
everyone for your comments.
Main Pros - a great idea and good subject,
great angle and motive, Message always
overides technique - Message here, very
important, brilliant (I specially like that
one)
Main Cons - Execution falls short,
Placement (maybe if you stood in the middle
of the doors, You stood to far to the right
(this one surprises me), Colours are junk,
colours seem a bit exaggerated, sky is noisy
(agreed))
I'll take all that as a lesson for my 1st
experience in the Pool. Thx again.
Thx also to all other comments
Finally, @(Rimbaudian) yes, Rimbaud is part
of the Doors/Blake/Huxley trip (Thx
kalokagathos) ;-)

I made that comment, because if you look at
the midline of the door, it's not vertical
even though the rest of the shot looks
centered. So it looks like you placed the
camera just a tiny bit too far to the right
(from the shooter's perspective).

Thx Patrick.. that was my first
"DeleteMe" try. And I got 5
positive votes. Knowing I use a compact
camera, that's not bad, and it did create
attention to the shot.. so globally, it was a
good experience.

Myopic. Sounds like epic. Those who dare to
throw their pearls before the swine are
heroes, Caritas. Those who are scared of
doing it - cowards. It's a matter of
agriculture.

Thx Nigel and all. Of course, when i took the
picture,I had no idea the thumbnail would
become mysterious. In fact, I had no idea
what the global result would be as the camera
was lying on its back facing up with a
two-sec self timer. Thx again and Merry
Christmas to all !

This is undoubtedly the best picture of your
Strasbourg set, though very different from
the rest. It has indeed stepped for a second
into a different world.
I know that cathedral so well, but I did
not recognise it at first. It was a shock to
realise that this exotic and mystical image
is simply an extraordinary view of an object
that had become almost commonplace to me.
You were right to quote Blake, who excelled
at seeing the divine in the mundane.
'"What," it will be Questiond,
"When the Sun rises do you not see a
round disk of fire somewhat like a
Guinea?" O no, no, I see an Innumerable
company of the Heavenly host crying
"Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God
Almighty."'

Thx all / Merci à tous. More comments than
what I expected.
One more personal comment - Great shots can
be done with compact cameras, In fact I'm not
sure I would have done it with an SLR as I
just setup the self timer to two sec and put
the camera on the ground facing up.
Now, I want an digital SLR too ;-) Next
birthday maybe.

Feuillu:
If you can take great photos like this with
a compact why the heck would you need an slr?
I am looking seriously at the Canon Powershot
A640 it seems to do most things has manual
control, uses normal batteries and it has
that great swivelling screen so whatever the
angle of the camera you can see what you are
doing, try that with an slr.

your're right in a sense that a compact can
do a llot (like this picture), are affordable
and portable, have lots of pixels and can
carry many semi-pro features. But the fact
remains you have limited zoom (28-100 for
mine), they have small so slow lenses and
needs more light / time for taking picture.
So for landscape or well lit subject,
they're great and I really enjoy my S80 but
for action pictures, for night pictures where
you can't use a tripod or a place to put your
camera with moving targets like people, the
results well be sub par.. such as my latest
in a FlickR@Paris monthly meeting
Posted 23 months ago.

I'm sure that you would take even better
pictures with an SLR. But the disadvantages
include (a) not so portable, I carry mine
around in a large shoulder bag, (b) difficult
to look through viewfinder when camera
pointing upwards, especially if resting on
furniture, (c) there are so many options that
may be set wrongly when taking a quick
photograph. Having said all that, I wouldn't
now go back to a compact. (Psychologically we
are biased in favour of decisions we have
already made!)
