Bringing the Boat in ! Baga, Goa !
The only day in Goa with some wonderfullight and skies and I made a sally to the nearby beaches of Baga and Calangute.
This is shot at the confluence of the Baga river as it meets the sea. the fishing boats come in laden with their catch and have to be pushed upstream.
A not so happy fisherman cuts across the beautiful frame with a delicate wish of swinging the darn thing in his hand at the intruders.
See it in extra large Original (4288 x 2848) if you have a widescreen monitor

Theyyam at Kottayampovil, Kerala - Light, shadows and Perspective or what we learn from Rembrandt and Leonardo da Vinci, Part Two
Light and Shadows and Perspective Part 2
Continuing the series to bring into focus the close up of the portrait, I am presenting this one. You may have seen this one before but I need to make it a separate stand alone shot.
This has been done to illustrate the perceptual phenomenon of the eyes in the image following a viewer. For more on what It is please see the write up here.

To better visualise the phenomenon, see this image large and traverse in front of the image looking at the portrait. Not only the eyes and the face seem to be following you with uncanny and eerie feeling but the accusatory hand and fingers also seem to be pointing at the viewer all the time.
Here is the large size..

Theyyam at Kottayampovil - Light, shadows and Perspective or what we learn from Rembrandt and Leonardo da Vinci. Full frame
Light and Shadows and Perspective.
A theyyam dancer at Kottayampovil in Kerala points out to the photogrpaher, perhaps, in a Fascist or Nazi or a Stalinist accusation, as to how the silly photographer needs to be thrown out.
The theyyam performers adorn elaborate and huge head gear. Here, sans his head gear the artist looks diminutive and human once again.
This portrait of the theyyam dancer is posted here to point out the essence of the three dimensions on a 2 dimensional photograph. Rembrandt used it with astute prowess in his paintings and of course the portrait of Monalisa by Leonardo da Vinci also uses the same technique.
As luck would have it, the light in Kottayampovil was good that day, bright and cheerful and the dancer was taking off the headgear and the rest of his accoutrement in an enclosure with some good light coming in. The thatched background with light leaking in through the pores provides an ideal background of shadows for the light dominated face and eyes to stand out.
Once the elements of light and shadows have provided the depth here, in the 2 dimensional plane, the eyes looking straight ahead and appearing to be the foremost part of the portrait give the perceptual illusion of a perspective that makes the dancer's eyes follow you from what ever angle you choose to look at the image.
To better visualise the phenomenon, see this image large and traverse in front of the image looking at the portrait. Not only the eyes and the face seem to be following you with uncanny and eerie feeling but the accusatory hand and fingers also seem to be pointing at the viewer all the time.
For a close up look of the face and the hand see this large size

Baga Beach in Goa with a lone water scooter on the sand
Goa has changed irreperably, for the worst. The massive influx of tourism has converted every square inch of the sand and the sea into a cess pit of commercial activity.
The beaches at Baga and Calangute attract the largest number of visitors. The season is just about to begin and the places are buzzing with scruffy commercial exploiters selling goods and wares and space on the beach. A not very confortable feeling indeed. It is no use to lament for the pristine glory of the past as time and money move inexorably towards making a place die its death many times over.
Food however seems to have got better. The restaurants from the early days now do brisk business and the food is good.
This day the light was good after months of waiting for the skies to clear out its layers of smog and dust.
Shot in the evening. And as is with the changing times, where a boat with oars should have been on the beach, you find a water scooter.
Time moves on !!!
Thanks for valuable inputs go out to Swapna Mahawadhi/ and Hiranya Malwatta/
