Central Coast Range Mountains
Parkfield-Coalinga Road
Monterey County, California
This shot was taken from the summit of the Central Coast Ranges, accessed on the desolate dirt road stretching between the small, earthquake-prone towns of Parkfield and Coalinga, California. The orientation is southeasterly, depicting (from foreground to background) the arid eastern slopes of the mountain range, the ancient dune sand hills and the (Sacramento-) San Joaquin Valley in the hazy distance. The local geology is fascinating here, characterized by strong uplifting and faulting along the famed Coalinga and San Andreas Faults. This eastern limit of Monterey County is completely foreign to the coastal paradise familiar to most people.

It's been awhile, Gary! Very nice shot. The
square format suits the subject well.

Thanks Andre and Zircon, especially for the
warm welcome-back! You folks are FAST on the
draw! I always appreciate your input.
It has been a while, and even though this
is a new post, it's from a trip I took
several years ago. I hope to have batches of
new photos from three photo tours I am
planning over the next three months.
Thanks again!

This is a nice shot Gary, Quite a bit of
landscape here. You captured the fault lines
well and you can see some of the uplifted
areas in the foreground. Not much out there
though. If the ground shakes only the cows
feel it.... and a few photographers maybe.
