The Search for New Light

Todd Inlet behind Butchart gardens. Black and white HDR from a single RAW processed using Photomatix and Topaz Adjust, among other things. The HDR really brought out the details in the trees and distant island.
I'm taking a flickr break folks. My creative juices are running low and I'm getting frustrated with my equipment. The Casio is a fun camera but it is very slow and heavy, in general, and as my photo subjects have started to shift, I need a camera that can be more responsive to the demands of shooting spontaneously. We'll see what happens. I'm probably going to buy two new cameras. I like the look of the Canon G10 for an every day carry-around camera, or perhaps the Sigma DP1, which is also small and produces brilliant images. I am am also really hoping to be able to find the funds for the new Nikon D90 (a step down from the D700, but it looks really great for less than half the money.
Take care everyone. I'll be watching you all and the streams of beauty you generate every day.

Mayor Fortin
My friend, Dean Fortin, won the Mayor's Office last night. I was happy to help him with his web strategy. He will be a great Mayor.
Here he is being interviewed after his victory on election night. I was snapping from the margins and noticed the mirror reflecting the scene.
Congratulations, Dean!

Creamsicle Sunset

Strait of Juan de Fuca fishers in silhouette. The variation in cloud one can see on any given day, especially with telephoto, is very entertaining. On the horizon we see the three stacks of the Port Angeles pulp mills.
HDR from a single raw using Topaz Adjust.

Under Construction

Hastings Street in Vancouver's decrepit Lower East Side. I walked along Hastings last night and was amazed at the extent of work that will be needed to rescue the neighborhood and its occupants. I tried to work with the reds to give it the sense of hell it must be for people who live there.
3 exposure HDR with further tonemapping and enhancement in Topaz Adjust.

City Under Sky
HDR does amazing things. This is a five exposure telephoto photograph that shows everything that would otherwise be in the shadows of a bright sky burning overtop the clouds obscuring the horizon.
Note Race Rocks lighthouse in the lower right...so tiny.
