Absolutely amazing photo! I assume you must

kind of plane do you fly?
Edit: I perused your sight, and it looks
like you're a 747 pilot. That's awesome!
Congratulations on having a cool job.

I like the contrails or whatever this is that
the jet puts behind. Very neat.

Thank you all for your comments. I dare to
say that this is one of my better/luckier
captures so far, although it is not entirely
clear (due to cropping and due to windshield
refraction).
"Whatever the jet puts behind" is
about the same as what comes out of a diesel
car, or an oil furnace, except a jet engine
burns so hot that the exhaust is much cleaner
than the above mentioned! What you see is not
smoke, but vapour. When you make a fire at
hundreds of degrees - choose centigrade,
fahrenheit, Kelvin or whatever suits you -
and then spit the combusted fuel/air out into
air that is below minus 60C ( minus 76F I
think), then the vapour will often
condensate. Just like when you start your car
on a cold winter day, you see vapour, not
smoke.
Unfortunately, there is this religious
conspiracy movement of people who firmly
believe that this vapour consist of mind
altering drugs, trying to make them do
certain things! Whenever this vapour comes
down from between 5 and 10 miles altitude, it
will be in a completely, and unpredictable
place in the world, and diluted with other
atmospheric air. But like other fanatic
religious movements, this so called
"Chemtrail" movement is beyond
reach of scientific and sensible arguments.
Unfortunately. There are so many important
issues in this world that should be dealt
with instead, so my naive hope is that they
would all realize some day. But I doubt it,
because they want to believe ...
Anyway, regarding refraction from aircraft
windshields I have come up with some
interesting findings, so if you are flight
crew member with the same problems, watch
this space or Fmail me!

Nice with the scientific explanation.
Really, I'm not looking for something deep
here. I simply like the photo and I thought
what I was seeing was called a contrail. I
thought the event has a proper representation
in science and I think you covered it nicely.
Conspiracy, a religious concern, I could
care less.
Great capture!

Yes, a contrail indeed, and thank you.
Care less, well, I think all radical
religions are potentially dangerous if they
get too much power. An unneccesary scare of
naive souls, just search Flickr or Google for
the word chemtrail, and you will be amazed how large this group
is - they are everywhere!

@ Dear Down:
I don‘t believe in these
"Chemtrailists" (it is simply
beyond any human reason), but nevertheless
contrails emit other bad exhaust gases, as
everybody learns at school or can read in the
news. In Europe, many so called cheep
airlines have started their businesses last
10 years so airtraffic is
"exploding". Besides the esthetics
of your fantastic pic it shows us the immense
output of greenhouse gases of such planes.
For verifying see news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2006/06/0606
14-contrails...
for instance.
Have a good day.

Goldschleife, you are right! We humans
pollute in many ways. Whether these contrails
are harmful, or not, is the question.
Regarding the greenhouse effect, it was shown
that after "9-11", most of all
civil flights in the US were banned for a
period. All the "missing contrails"
for the lack of flights in that period meant
that the temperature rose, for increased
sunshine reaching the Earth. The question has
been raised by some if this means that
contrails delay or counteract the greenhouse
effect or not.
But you are right, it is pollution indeed.
Like so many other means of transportation,
heating, aircondition etc. I am in favour of
windmills, solar power, lean cars and so on,
but at the moment, it is hard to do more than
is being done for aircraft, as it is hard to
power it in other ways, with our current
technology. But I surely hope that some kind
of environmental power for aircraft is found,
better yesterday than tomorrow!

Dear Core, I share your opinion, there is no
other way to travel between continents or
other large distances. But look there are
cities in Germany with only 200 km distance
between, which are connected by an ICE (very
fast train, 280 km/h) – but many businessmen
use the plane here on account of time saving.
There is too little sensibility.
Anyway, your stream is breathtaking !

Ah, for short distances, I even prefer the
train. Often, I have gone from Frankfurt
Airport to Amsterdam (city centre), and a
train is quicker then, when you consider
amount of flights/trains, checkin time,
waiting for luggage and transport to the city
center!
So yes, I think we agree :-)

For those government-conspiracy chemtrailers,
it should be noted that the visible portion
of these condensation trails is primarily...
water-- in the form of ice crystals. This
shouldn't be too hard for them to understand
given the fact that jet fuel/kerosene and
other petrofuels are known for being made of
"hydrocarbons", i.e. such fuels are
partly made of H2O. And yet... the
conspiracy lives on, I guess.

One of the main "pollutants"
contributing to global warming is, ahem,
"bovine flatulence".
However, I don't see many environmental
protestors protesting at the rear end of any

other emissions coming from the same area.

Ahhh, yes, and who adds the
aluminium/aluminoum?
You can find so many things via Google, do
you believe it all? Just because it is
repeated over and over again, does not make
it true. I am not saying it is not harmful at
all, but if you want to do something serious
about pollution, then start with filtering
air from coal powered plants and diesel cars
(those diesels that are not yet). Make
countries who care less about the environment
enforce inspections on vehichles, also on
emissions. Those small particles from diesel
engines, and the smoke from the coal power
plants, and just filled with cancer causing
particles - kills way more people than
traffic accidents does ... and contrails. It
is not so realistic to do more about
contrails for now. What can be done is being
done, and despite the complaining about high
fuel prices, I think it is a good incentive
for speeding up the process even more. Sorry,
but it is not yet possible to fly long
distances with solar powered electric
aircraft. I hope it will, sooner than later,
and even quite recently, an aircraft flew for
the first time, on hydrogen cells (try google
on THAT one).
