Notre Dame Gargoyle

Gargoyles are a common feature on Gothic-style buildings. The Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris (where this gargoyle is) has more than I have ever seen on one building! Symbolically and theologically, the gargoyles are meant to be spirits somewhere between Earth and Heaven (hence their positions between the ground and the sky, on the high parts of the cathedrals) which ward of evil spirits, making the inside of the church a "sanctuary". Logistically, they act as rain gutters, vomitting water that is drained from the roof.
