To be honest, I can't tell you. I set the
camera up before I went to bed and then I
woke up in the middle of the night the
battery was dead. Apparently it saved the
image to internal memory, because I put in a
fresh battery, closed the compartment, heard
the mirror drop, and saw the 'write' light
come on.

Someone who understands star tail photography
should be able to give an approximation on
exposure time. Given the length of the
trails I think it is more then the 13
minutes.

Definately more than a 13-minute exposure.
To the person who posted the note asking
why the stars make circular tracks -- it's
because the earth rotates.
BTW, the earth is round :-)

Lovely shot.
The star trails are caused by what's called
diurnal motion
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diurnal_motion)
- judging by the arc of the trails around the
circumpolar centre I'd estimate a bit over an
hour exposure?

How did you manage to take this shot without
noise? My own experiments seemed to show that
anything over about 10 minutes was hopelessly
bespeckled. I was shooting 1600ASA or H
(3200). Perhaps shooting at 100ASA for a much
longer period reduces noise?
Posted 20 months ago.

If you look at the full size, you will see
lots of noise. I need to do some sort of
noise reduction on this photo and repost it.

Great shot, but....
It does seem a bit noisy. And, I'd prefer
the night sky be significantly darker. It
looks a bit muddy as is.
Kudos for properly exposing the tent!

Beautiful photograph! Really well done! And
lucky you were able to retain it after the
loss of power!
In reply to the length of star trails...I
would estimate around 2.0 hours for this.
Here's my photo of Polaris as the center
and it is 2.1 hours...and I think your trails
might be a tad shorter than mine perhaps?
Hard to say though!

Absolutely gorgeous exposure. Makes it look
like a bright night, like when everything is
illuminated by low-hanging clouds. KUDOS :)
I intend to shoot lots of pictures like
this someday, when I have the money to buy a
professional DSLR camera. Right now, it's
just a mediocre Powershot A620...and I don't
even have it with me anymore.

I've just created a new group for photos
that were not easy to take. Pictures from
places that were more difficult to access
than your own garden and so on. The group is
still empty, so I'd like you to join.

This picture was not easy to take.

13 minutes? I hope the battery was already

a 13 minute exposure, probably would have
been too bright if it were longer.

just wouldn't go dark when I was trying this.
I dont wanna sound like everyone else on this

asked the same ?'s and I know its too late
for this shot but did you use in camera NR?
