S.J. Alexander, I use an Argoflex 75 with a Pringles can duct taped to it. I didn't trim th ecan at all (except to cut the bottom out of course).

Here is a picture:

I ended up wrapping it in some decorative paper so it would look a little nicers. I then use my 50 mm f1.8 fixed lens on my Rebel XTi w/ a 2x close up ring.

I recently changed my set-up though so I can travel easier with the contraption - I replaced the Pringles can and am now using one of the neoprene wine bottle holders which rolls down to be more portable. I am still perfecting use of the new method - it is more difficult to line up because the neck is shorter in length and so flexible that it collapses too easily on itself. I think I have solved it though with the clever use of a shoe horn and additional close up rings (I now combine the 4x with the 1x)...
