cold little queen bumble bee by crime scene

cold little queen bumble bee

found this large bumble bee queen clinging to the side of the basement wall, looking verrry chilled as I came home in the dark. it was in an awkward spot and of course I had to use the flash, but you can make her out well enough to make the point. it's hard to see how large she is, but she was a little less than an inch or a little bigger than 2 centimeters

bumble bee hives are very small and all the workers and the old queen die every fall save for the young queens, and they hibernate in the ground over winter and come up in the spring and start to lay their eggs

I looked for her in the morning but she was gone, probably had dug down into the earth just below her -- hopefully I'll see her in the spring

Remembering... by crime scene

Remembering...

Recall the poem by a young Canadian flyer stationed in UK for training

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

Pilot Officer Gillespie Magee
No 412 squadron, RCAF
Killed 11 December 1941 on a training flight in UK
Age 19
