Beauty! Forgive my ignorance, but do you
know what species this is? And this is in
the famous ancient Burgess Shale, of all
places, where soft tissue is often
fossilized? Wow!

For carl lexicon, the Burgess shale contains
many soft bodied organisms. The trilobite
though, related to arthropods contains an
exoskeleton. Some of the fossils are saved in
a way that preserves the soft body parts of
the tirlobites.
See also the following picture which shows
where the Walcott Quarry is in relationship
to the Mount Stephen Trilobite beds.

@ Moby! The Burgess Shale Trilobite beds are
found just above Trail B.C. About 1000 people
per year are allowed to go in by permit to
see this UNESCO Site.

Many thanks for publishing these photos -
absolutely fascinating. I enjoyed Stephen J
Gould's book ("Wonderful Life")
about the Burgess Shale fossils and here is a
chance to see them, so to speak, in the life.
Great work....

So incredible to see fossils like this - it's
really clear too isn't it? Nice idea to use
the coin for comparison.
There's a place called Blue Anchor about 50
miles away that has lots of great fossils in
all the rocks on the beach. It's right on the
English side of the Bristol channel on the
Severn river. We went when I was young to
visit my uncle who had his caravan there at
the time.
